Poland Selects Saab A26 Submarines to Strengthen Baltic Sea Deterrence

Saab has signed a contract with the Polish State Treasury Armaments Agency for the production and delivery of three A26-class submarines. Valued at approximately SEK 47 billion, the contract also includes a weapons package as well as training and support services. Deliveries will be conducted progressively, with the final submarine scheduled for delivery in 2038.

The A26 submarine is optimized for the demanding operational environment of the Baltic Sea, with a strong emphasis on acoustic discretion, survivability, and covert operations. Its capabilities in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, stealth, and freedom of maneuver are expected to enhance Poland’s contribution to naval multi-domain operations and regional deterrence.

As part of the agreement, Saab plans to establish maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities in Poland in cooperation with local industry, supporting long-term sustainment and national strategic autonomy. Until the new submarines enter service, Poland will operate the Swedish submarine HMS Södermanland as an interim capability under a separate bilateral arrangement.
