Romania Selects Rafael’s SPYDER System in €2 Billion Air Defense Deal

Romania will acquire six integrated SPYDER air defense systems from Rafael under a strategic framework estimated to be worth more than €2 billion. The package includes mobile launchers, Python- and Derby-family interceptors, radar systems, training equipment, operator instruction, and long-term logistical support. According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, the first two systems are expected to be delivered within three years of the first follow-on contract, while personnel training will be completed before formal acceptance activities begin.

SPYDER is a mobile short- to medium-range air defense system designed to detect, track, and engage a broad spectrum of aerial threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. The acquisition is intended to strengthen Romania’s layered air defense architecture and improve its ability to protect critical infrastructure, military formations, and national airspace in accordance with NATO operational standards. The system’s mobility and modular configuration are also expected to improve deployment flexibility and responsiveness against rapidly evolving threats.

The agreement further includes extensive industrial cooperation and local production in Romania through collaboration with the national defense industry. This arrangement is expected to support domestic maintenance, sustainment, and future production capabilities while strengthening Romania’s strategic autonomy. Rafael described the agreement as the largest contract in the company’s history, while the acquisition also reflects the broader European effort to expand layered air and missile defense capabilities amid growing regional security concerns.
